Bio - Rufus Smith


We are very please to have Rufus Smith “Smithy” join us. After starting his high school with St Joseph Preparatory and completing it at Bardstown High School in Kentucky. Smithy, join the United States Air Force Civil Engineering Department. He was assign to the heating department where he earned his apprenticeship. During his tour of duty he acquired many certificates in the trades and other areas of interest. Completing his tour of duty, He move to Canada where he worked for 20 years started out in Quebec City, then on to Montreal, Ontario, Edmonton and British Columbia. Some of his employers were Johnson Controls, Bechtel, Bell Canada, Alberta Government Telephones, Carrier of Canada were he was a working supervisor repairing, servicing and pm of Chillers and Absorption units.

His Jobs took him many places throughout Canada working in the oil fields where it can get 40/65 degrees below zero. Worked on Cruise and merchant Ships and Teaching Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration to their employee’s .Upon Leaving Canada he move to California and worked for the State and County Government. After getting established he started his on company. There he study and received his California Contractors, Building and Mechanical Inspectors License. With Bell Canada he received his 2nd Class Steam and Oil Burners Contractors license. In Edmonton Alberta he became a member of RSES. He received a certificate for achieving the highest Test score on the hvacr contractors license Exam for that year. Alberta Institute of Technology he completed a year of training in electronics and received his license in Television Service & Repair. British Columbia Institute of Technology he received his certification as a pipe fitter and in Business Accounting.

He graduated from the Art Instruction School and taught oil painting to classes of 30/ 50 students. He put on exhibitions of his students and his works, which sold from $50/ $1000 a piece.

During his travels, Smithy brought a couple of saxophones with him on every job out of town .He study and practices every chance he got when he was out of town for weeks at a time. He became quite proficient at reading, writing and playing music. He got the opportunity to practice and play with some of the well known musicians in the business along the way.
