Bio - Theresa Horton Alexander

My name is Theresa Horton Alexander. I am a degreed Mechanical Engineer. I always wanted to know about the things that surrounded me and how they worked so studying engineering allowed me to learn about how we get some of the comforts we take for granted. Like clean air and water, electricity and heat, air conditioning and refrigeration.

Currently I work full time with the US Air Force as a Civilian Mechanical Engineer and I teach part time at a community college. In my position with the Air Force, I perform mechanical engineering work on an Air Force Base. I solve problems concerned with production and use of energy, especially those associated with air quality issues, so I get to interface with mechanical systems include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning issues.

In addition to my position with the Air Force, I teach heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration courses at a local community college. My teaching position gives me the opportunity to relate the theoretical aspects of HVACR to the practical side to the technicians in my class. I really enjoy teaching and especially enjoy helping people train for a productive career in the HVACR field.

Before working for the Air Force, I spent fourteen years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an Environmental Engineer. I worked in a division that is responsible for implementing various air pollution reduction programs. We addressed air pollution generated from power plants and industrial facilities. Previous positions at a steel mill, power plant, on a Naval base and with environmental companies helped me strengthen my expertise and interest in this area because of the exposure to mechanical equipment, such as boilers, other heat transfer equipment and pollution control equipment.

My interest in improving Indoor Air Quality issues lead me to begin studying and taking technician level courses in HVACR. I begin working on my own properties and those of my friends and soon begin teaching others to do the same. When I retire, I plan to have expanded my HVACR business to include others so I can open a training center. Maybe my son and eventually my granddaughter will join me so I can spend more time addressing other Air Quality issues. Until that time, I am going to continue to have fun meeting and instructing new students every term.
